This Little Light of Mine

Mar 22, 2021

Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in Heaven”

Imagine you are in a room with a group of people and you just lost power... the only light filling the room now are the little lines of moonlight seeping through the cracks of the blinds.

Imagine everyone around you getting so frustrated, wondering when there will be some relief from this darkness all around. Close your eyes and just sit in that room. Feel the tension and frustration all around you.

Listen to all the groaning and sounds of people searching around you trying to find any form of light. Keep imagining yourself in that room.... Now imagine that you have just found a source of light that you can either turn on or keep to yourself.

What are you going to do?

Are you going to crouch down in the corner and hide it for you and only you? Are you going to cover it up out of fear that it might not be as bright as you think? Or are you going to boldly stand up and turn on the source of light that everyone is looking for?

The answer is obvious, right??

BUT what if we switched the analogy to a spiritual context... Would you boldly shine the light that you have received through Christ in a room full of unbelievers? Would you even shine it in a room of people who claim to be believers, but who just need a word of encouragement or redirection? Or would you just stay silent, and keep it for only you to enjoy?

How do you answer it now?

As followers of Christ, how often is it that we have thoughts of doubt that creep into our minds when it comes to whether or not we should shine the light that we have received in Christ?

For a lot of us, we begin to fear that others might think we are weird or that it’s just not ever a “good time.” Or maybe we even feel insecure about sharing the light because we think it won’t be as good for anyone else as it has been for us.

Satan has such a clever way of manipulating us... it truly makes me sick. This is such a real issue. Believers barely share the Gospel or even stand up for Christlikeness anymore! That should truly break our hearts.

Getting caught up in Satan’s trap can make us become just like the light that is covered up in a dark room… not fulfilling any type of purpose. Light is always meant to bring life into a space and influence everyone it touches, but we can’t do that if we cover it up or keep it only for ourselves.

I know this is such a simple concept, but I just want all of us to really think about how well we truly are at sharing/showing the light that we have received in Christ.

Let's think!

If you had to pick a “stage of light” for yourself, which one would you choose?

  •  SUPER BRIGHT:  You always shine your light in any way that you can with no hesitations.
  • GLIMMERS OF BRIGHTNESS: You share your light, but only when someone else does it first.
  • CANDLELIGHT: You have a constant desire to share your light, but you just get too insecure and fearful when the situation arises because you feel you don’t know how.
  • DIM: You rarely care to share your light. If someone asks you, then you’ll say all the right words that will get you by, but other than that your life is good and so is everyone else’s around you so it's not something to really worry about.
  • DARK: You just don’t care at all.

For me, I feel like I shift levels quite often. This is an area that I deeply desire to improve in. No matter where you find yourself, there’s always room for growth, so do not be discouraged!

Just remember that there is a spiritual battle going on around you and Satan is doing everything in his power to get you away from following and sharing Jesus.

As believers, our purpose here on this earth is to make disciples. Christ must be evident in our lives. Go back to a time when you really encountered Jesus. Don't you want others to experience Him like that too? If you feel as though you first need Jesus to become more real to you, then start pursuing that! Either way, Jesus always comes through and will for someone else too!

You were made for so much more than to just live a lightless and spiritually quiet life!

Let's let everyone in on the light that changes everything.

Let's get to becoming SUPER BRIGHT all for the glory of God!
